Weekend: Kite Festival & Baseball Games
Cary, NC — You know spring is coming when the calendar lists baseball games, soccer games and a kite festival. This weekend, Cary also welcomes the first week of March with an African American film festival, theater productions and more.

The Cary Theater’s African American Film Festival kicks off tonight with showings of “Rescue Men: The Story of the Pea Island Lifesavers” at 7 pm followed by “Blood Done Sign My Name” at 9:15 pm. The “Rescue Men” showing will end with a Q&A with local director Allan Smith. These showings are free, and the series continues until Sunday, March 6, 2016.

The USA Baseball Irish Classic Games are this weekend, and if you haven’t yet experienced west Cary’s USA Baseball National Training Complex, now’s the time to try it. Baseball games continue all weekend, but Friday games are at 1:30 pm and 5 pm. Weekend passes are $30 per adult, and day passes are $12. You can buy tickets online.
Alternatively, there’s a RailHawks Soccer Game at WakeMed Soccer Park at 10 am against NC State.
The First United Methodist Church of Cary is hosting their Children’s Spring Consignment Sale this weekend at the church. Shop for gently used clothing, toys, books, nursery equiptment, maternity clothing and more on Friday between 6 pm-8 pm for a $5 donation to a local family in need, or shop for free between 8 pm-9 pm. This event repeats on Saturday.
The Cary Playwrights’ Forum kicks off their weekend-long productions of Chakra: The Wheel of Life at 7:30 pm at the Cary Arts Center. This is a co-production of an English translation of a 40-minute one-act about the circle of revenge and forgiveness/healing based on one story from the ancient Indian epic The Mahabharata. It includes classical Indian music.
The African American Film Festival continues tonight with film screenings at 7 pm and 9 pm.
Enjoy live music and local wine and beer at Chatham Hill Winery until 10 pm tonight during Wine Away Friday.

The African American Film Festival continues today with three film screenings at 10 am, 2 pm and 7 pm.
Four baseball games continue to run all day today at Cary’s USA Baseball complex.
The F-UMC’s Consignment Sale continues today as well, with free shopping and all merchandise half off between 8-11 am.
The Ivy Cottage shop in Cary is hosting a Fairy Garden Party all-day from 10 am-6 pm. Catch live demonstrations at 11 am and 1 pm, enjoy tea and homemade cookies and learn how to make your own natural centerpiece. There is no cost to attend the party. If you choose to purchase the supplies for the fairy gardens, they will discounted 20% on the day of the party.
Stop by and visit the new Elizabeth’s Home & Garden Boutique in All Booked Up in downtown Apex between 11 am-5 pm for a grand opening celebration with live music, drawings for free gifts and fantastic sale prices.
Bond Park’s annual Kite Festival, happening Saturday in Cary, is a fun way to spend the afternoon flying kites and watching others soar. Certificates and awards will be given to a variety of categories.
Registration begins at 12:30 pm and flying begins at 1 pm.
The Philharmonic Association and the Triangle Youth String Orchestra will present The El Quixote Festival, an in-Spanish performance featuring internationally renowned Spanish troubadour Crispin d’Olot, at 7 pm at the Cary Arts Center. In this show, he shares stories, songs and poems dedicated to Quixote, and takes the audience to a time of castles, princesses, knights, minstrels and troubadours. Tickets are $10 for adults.

The USA Baseball Games and the African American Film Festival conclude today. Check the calendar for times.
Fit & Able Productions’ Sole Mates Run, which features a kids’ sprint, a 5K and a 10K starts today at 2:45 pm. In this run, teams of two run the whole course together. Fees are $10 for the kids sprint, $20 for the 5K and $40 for the 10K. The race is for all ages – walkers, joggers and runners! Register and find more information about the race online.

It’s First Friday in downtown Raleigh this weekend, which means live music, extra art displays and extended hours in many downtown venues. Check the First Friday Art Walk website for more information on where to go.
Or, jump into art hands-on with a Clay Date Night at the Durham Arts Council Clay Studio at Northgate Mall. You’ll experiment with clay as the instructor introduces a variety of techniques. Each person will complete and paint a functional piece of pottery that will be glazed and fired by the instructor and available for pick up 2-3 weeks after the workshop.
Enjoy fresh air, sunshine and a great workout this weekend when you take one of three group hikes at the Eno River State Park in Durham on Sunday between 9 am-4 pm – just choose the one that’s best for you.
