Harold’s Blog: Vacation Week, Cary Arts Center, The Masters, My First Home

This week was a vacation week. Despite that I still had one activity and answered emails.

Cary Arts Center Tour and Update

Monday was my only mayoral event of the week. I toured the new Cary Arts Center along with council member Adcock, council member Robinson, Scott Fogelman, and Susan Moran. The tour was hosted by Parks and Recs Lyman Collins.

The building is nearing completion with fixtures and flooring now being the focus. The classrooms and meeting spaces are large and will allow the town to create more programs. The auditorium will be incredible with fixed seating in the 380 range and overall seating near 450. The stage in the auditorium will allow major productions.

Throughout the building special attention has been given to saving original pieces of the school building. One room will have floors that will not be redone so that the viewing public can see where the old school desks were. Lockers doors will be used as wainscoting in other areas. Outside the building 100 year old columns will be repaired and cleaned. Brick pavers will include solar pavers that will absorb energy during daylight and illuminate during the night.

This will be a fantastic addition to Cary. Right now staff is looking to start moving in around the May time frame. The first events in the building will be free and will be in the June time frame. July will be the first month of significant use and the dedication will be in August.

33 Years at the Masters

Tuesday through Sunday I was working at the Masters Golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia. This was my 33rd year, with the exception of 1989 when my oldest daughter was born. It was a beautiful week (hot) and a fantastic tournament. It doesn’t get any better than the Masters and the Augusta National.

Mail: Nightclubs, Special Needs, Cary Bus Programs, Burglaries, Development

Emails this week included a complaint about a nightclub, a complaint about programs for those with special needs, a complaint about Cary bus service, a complaint about burglaries, and a complaint about a lack of development in a certain part of Cary. I also received several requests to appear and speak at events.

Back in the Saddle

Next week will be busy for me as I make up for time spent on vacation. It includes a council meeting, a work session on sustainable site design standards, the spring litter sweep (please join me), several meetings, events, and speaking engagements.
