Cary Team Qualifies for Odyssey of the Mind Worlds, Needs Your Support

Cary, NC – An Odyssey of the Mind team from Penny Road Elementary in Cary is headed to the World Finals at the University of Maryland, May 27-30. But sending the team to the Worlds is not cheap.

Building a Better Moustrap?

Odyssey of the Mind is a problem-solving competition emphasizing creativity and teamwork. Each team works for 4-5 months, meeting at least once a week to solve a specific problem. This activity is on top of the team’s already busy schedule of school, homework, and other extra-curricular activities.

The solution is totally driven by the team members, no outside assistance is allowed. The Penny Road Elementary School’s team problem was called “Extreme Mousemobiles”.

They had to create a mousetrap propelled vehicle that completed a series of challenges and did it all in an entertaining and fun way. The team had an 8 minute time limit to present their solution and had to keep all costs within a budget. All work was completed by the team: construction, script writing, costume design, etc.

The team consists of three 4th graders (Kush Jain, Vishal Kasula, and Campbell Turner) and three 5th graders (Andrew Bettner, Brian Chetwynd, and Nick Morris).

Odyssey of the Team

The team placed at two levels of competition in order to qualify for the World competition. They first competed in the North Carolina Eastern Regional in March and then advanced to the North Carolina State tournament on April 2.

At the World Finals, over 750 teams from all over the US and from over 20 other countries compete. The team will be meeting and competing against teams from Canada, China, Hong Kong, Poland, Singapore, and many more.

Congrats OMers! I’m one of the coaches at Davis Drive Middle and all four of our teams competed at the State Finals for the second year in a row. It was close, but this year we are sending just one team to on World Finals and we are excited! It is a wonderful program!

Great work kids- I know how hard this is, because my daughter did Odyssey last year!
