Northwoods Elementary – Walk to School Day
Story and pictures from Stacy Dalness, Northwoods Elementary PTA.
Cary, NC – Northwoods Elementary celebrated International Walk to School Day on October 3. The muggy weather didn’t keep away our Northwoods families. We ended up having 245 walkers, including Cary’s mayor, Harold Weinbrecht, join in the event!

The Mayor welcomed everyone and then spoke about the importance of getting our bodies and brains moving every day to help us stay focused.
The walk began at Robert V. Godbold Park and led the families through Cary’s greenway system on the Northwoods Trail to Northwoods Elementary.
The students were greeted by Northwoods principal, Ms. Robin Wahl, who acted as the crossing guard at the one residential street that was crossed along the route.
As the kids approached the finish line, they were greeted by the school mascot, Mel the koala and rewarded with stickers and Clif bars. The kids enjoyed having their pictures taken with the mayor when they arrived at school!
What a healthy start to the day!
