Over 500 Life Sciences Companies in Triangle

Cary, NC – Wake County Economic Development has released new information about the Life Sciences industry in the Triangle. With more than 500 companies in the area, North Carolina ranks third nationally in Life Sciences behind California and Massachusetts.

An Industry by Sectors

Life Sciences in the Triangle cluster around four industry subgroups:

  • Agricultural Biotechnology
  • Drug Research, Development and Manufacturing
  • Medical Devices and Diagnostics
  • Contract Research Organizations

Drug Research is particularly strong in the area. It accounts for two-thirds of the state’s life sciences industry.

Big Names

All of the major life sciences industries are represented by companies in the Triangle.

Some of the big names include GlaxoSmithKline, Quintiles, BD Technologies,  Syngenta, BASF, Bayer CropScience, Monsanto and Novartis.

$4.25 Billion in Payroll

According to the report, 57,000 people work in life sciences in our region, earning an average salary of $75,000.

That’s $4.25 billion in payroll annually for life sciences in the Triangle.

One of the most interesting elements of the information is a map of life sciences in the Triangle. It’s striking how many companies are clustered in a corridor from Durham down through RTP and into Morrisville and northern Cary.

The map includes an index of nearly 500 companies.
