Cary, NC — A portion of SW Cary Parkway will close for railroad safety improvements beginning on July 14, 2014.

One Month Closure Starts July 14

The closure will take place at the intersection of SW Cary Parkway and Old Apex Road, and will remain closed for several weeks while the Town of Cary, NCDOT and CSX Railroad partner to give the intersection pedestrian improvements including sidewalk upgrades.

The work, if all goes according to plan, will continue for 28 consecutive days, to allow workers to safely complete pedestrian and traffic signal improvements at this very busy intersection.

According to Town of Cary, the SW Cary Parkway intersection is expected to reopen mid-August. When finished, drivers and cyclists will see 1,500 square yards of new asphalt, 300 feet of new sidewalk, eight upgraded traffic signals, eight new pedestrian signals, and marked crosswalks. Roughly $490,000 in Capital funding is allocated for these railroad crossing repairs.

“Understanding the vital role these streets play for our business owners and residents, we’re committed to working safely, efficiently and effectively as possible to complete the project on time and within budget,” said Bob Shultes, Transportation Engineer.

“We worked hard to find a way to complete this work without having to entirely close Cary Parkway in both directions for this project, but after consulting with both NCDOT Rail Division and CSX, instituting a full closure was necessary in order to be time sensitive and cost effective,” added Shultes.

All businesses and residences in vicinity of the work area will remain accessible during all phases of work. While the closure and detours will be in effect 24/7, work will be restricted to weekdays from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

SW Cary Parkway Detour

From Town of Cary:

During the closure, signed detours will assist motorists around the construction. Drivers should follow Old Apex Road to US-64 to Lake Pine Drive; cyclists have the option to follow a portion of the same route, or to use greenway and bike routes that circle Apex Lake and run between Old Apex Road and Lake Pine Drive.

According to our calculations, a trip from one side of the SW Cary Parkway closure to the other is approximately 4.5 miles via US-64 and Lake Pine.

Best advice: choose an alternate route until mid-August if you travel regularly through the intersection of SW Cary Parkway and Old Apex Road.

An alternative detour is going up Lake Pine Dr, on the north side of Cary Pkwy, to SW Maynard Rd, then left on Maynard, then left again at either Old Apex or W. Chatham to return to SW. Cary Pkwy. That’s roughly 3.9m.

The detour map you posted suggests a route through a residential neighborhood, bypassing part of Lake Pine Dr.. Please update your post so the roads in Picardy Point are not the suggested route. There are lots of kids in that neighborhood.
