Cary Hosts African-American Celebration Feb. 21
Cary, NC — The Town of Cary, in partnership with The Ujima Group, will host its 18th African-American Celebration this Saturday, February 21, 2015 at The Cary Theater downtown at 3 pm.
The Ujima Group
Cary is filled with many groups and nonprofits that promote art, culture, help, and care to all residents. The Ujima Group, a 501(c)3 based out of Cary, is one of these great organizations.
The Ujima group was created in 1994 to promote cultural diversity, computer technology, risk prevention, leadership, and athletic enrichment through educational programs and art. Their events are meant to empower young people to become active leaders in the community by fostering a better understanding of and tolerance for people of different cultures.
Core to their teachings are the value of diversity and that adolescents of every culture are at risk. Some of The Ujima Group’s events and community service ventures include:
- Educating teens about the importance of being active in their communities
- Devoting time and talents to developing community pride
- Providing volunteer opportunities
The African-American Celebration is one of their largest events of the year, and it’s free to the community.
African-American Celebration
The celebration will begin with an ensemble’s performance entitled “In Their Own Words: Enduring Slavery & Freedom.” The piece, which will dramatize accounts of slavery, includes local award-winning actress Barnette Hunter and afro-percussionist Dr. Bradley Simmons and his ensemble.
Hunter, an NC State graduate, has won two technical theater awards from Raleigh Little Theater and has performed with numerous companies in the area. Dr. Simmons, who has played African and Afro-Cuban percussion music since the age of nine, is the Musical Director at Duke University.
There, he teaches West African music and history. He leads the percussion ensemble “Elements of Percussion,” which was recognized by Indy Week as the “Best of Triangle Theatre 2014.” The group travels locally and nationally.
