Cary, NC — Highs will be in the 60’s this weekend, so it’s the perfect time to get out of the house and celebrate the first Spring weekend of 2015. The calendar provides many opportunities to do so, including an Arbor Day celebration, a kite festival, and two special outdoor nighttime events.

On Friday, from 10 am-noon, Carolina Family Real Estate will hold a free educational workshop, 7 Threats to Your Family’s Security, at their Kilmayne Drive office in Cary. The workshop will cover a variety of topics revolving around protecting your family’s finances. Seating is limited; call 919-299-0770 to register.

On Friday evening, Six Strings Presents will bring county music songwriter and singer Richard Leigh to the Cary Theater at 8 pm. Tickets, which range from $10-$25, are available online.

From 10-11:30 am on Saturday, children and their caregivers can register to decorate a colorful kite at Bond Park Community Center. Then, if they’d like, participants can return in the afternoon to fly their kites at the annual Kite Festival. Registration for the festival opens at 12:30 pm; kite-flying begins at 1. Kite festival participation is free.

Each year, Cary celebrates Arbor Day with a tree dedication ceremony and fun activities. This Saturday, the event will take place in Downtown Cary at the Ivey-Ellington House starting at 11 am. Crafts for kids, entertainment and educational activities will continue until 2 pm and, while supplies last, each attendee can take home their own tree to plant at home.

On Saturday night, the Cary Invasion professional basketball team will take on the Greensboro Cobras at the Herb Young Community Center at 7 pm.

Also on Saturday evening, The Cary will play a double feature: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, both the 1946 and the 2013 versions. The first is at 7 pm; the later is at 9:30 pm. Tickets are $5 each at the theater.

Families of all ages can participate in a Family Night Hike at Hemlock Bluffs on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary from 6:30-8 pm to explore nature as the sun sets. Bring a flashlight. $16 for Cary residents; $20 for others. Register by calling 919-387-5980.

Across the Triangle

Comedian Joe Machi will be performing at Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh Thursday, March 19, 2015 through Saturday, March 21, 2015. Showtimes are at 8 pm on Thursday and at 7:30 and 10 pm on Friday and Saturday. Tickets range from $15-$138; find more details online.

On Friday, March 20, 2015, from 7:45-9 pm, kids ages 11-14 can bring participate in a Flashlight Egg Hunt in Chapel Hill. Eggs with candy, and golden eggs with prizes, will be hidden within Wilson Park. Participants must bring their own flashlight and basket/bag to collect eggs in the dark. Registration starts at 7:45 pm; hunt begins at 8:20. This event is free.

Disney Live! Mickey’s Magic Show will be at the Durham Performing Arts Center on Friday night and Saturday afternoon this weekend. Tickets start at $25 and are available online.
