Kwanzaa Celebration – Tuesday in Cary

Kwanzaa

Cary, NC — Cary Kwanzaa is Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at the Cary Arts Center.

Cary Kwanzaa

The Cary Kwanzaa event is a cultural celebration for the entire community that honors African-American heritage. The event is free and organized in partnership with the Ujima Group, a local non-profit that works to promote cultural diversity, computer technology and risk prevention through the arts. This Kwanzaa celebration is one of their largest events of the year.

Crafts, Dancing & Storytelling

This year’s celebration will feature a vendor market and a children’s village full of hands-on arts and crafts activities. The market and activities start at 11 am and continue until 3 pm, when performances will start inside the Cary Arts Center auditorium.

The ceremony will feature performances by Shabutaso: The Magic of African Rhythm and the North Carolina Association of Black storytellers.

Liberian natives Baba and Mama Shabu founded the Durham-based Magic of African Rhythm to offer musical performances, workshops and residencies across North Carolina and beyond. In all their offerings, they express the African concept of Ngoma, the “rhythmic thread” that links drumming, singing, dancing, and visual arts. The North Carolina Association of Black Storytellers, Inc. preserves, protects, and passes on the historical truths, folklore, legends, myths, and fables important to African American traditions. The group’s art embodies the history and cultures of Africans and African Americans, especially those in North Carolina.

Robbie Stone, the Cary Arts Center Supervisor, said:

This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to learn about and celebrate Kwanzaa through song, dance and other performances.
