Art: 20 Light Displays – Friday in Chapel Hill

Editor’s Note: We found an exciting arts event this weekend in Chapel Hill thanks to our friends at The Better Sleep Store.

Chapel Hill, NC — On Friday, February 12, 2016, 20 illuminated art installations, light projections and programs using light can be found around Chapel Hill and Carrboro. This new, one-night event is called Shimmer.

Shimmer – Friday in Chapel Hill

Shimmer is a free arts event that, for one night only, will be a part of Chapel Hill’s monthly Second Friday Art Walk.

The event aims to bring Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities together to see a brilliant display created by artists who show expression by working with light. Starting at 6pm on Friday, February 12, 2016, more than 20 locations in Chapel Hill and Carrboro will display the lighted works of 23 artists. Jurors from Durham’s Nasher Museum of Art, the Carrboro ArtsCenter and other art institutions selected the artists from a large pool of applicants. Some of the chosen artists are from North Carolina, but others will be coming from New York, Pennsylvania and five other states.

The artists all have one thing in common – they work with light.

Venues & Displays

The artwork you’ll see at Shimmer ranges from 3D installations to projection art to LED-lit dance performances. Upon exploring the list of artists and their artworks, we saw chandeliers hanging from trees, colorful glowing bottles, large buildings outlined with bold light, detailed projections on brick walls and more.

You can plan your route through the interior and exterior spaces that are part of the light-filled community by looking at the 20 venues listed on the event website. Some of the most recognizable venues are The Ackland Art Museum, the Carrboro Arts Center and the Chapel Hill/Orange County Vistors Bureau, but you’ll also find Shimmer art on the side of the St. Paul AME Church, on a tree beside Calavera, and in an interactive light display featuring 150 blown glass globes illuminated with LEDs that respond to motion in front of the Midway Community Kitchen.

The organizers of Shimmer picked these varied locations on purpose in efforts to create a cultural bridge between Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Sarah Wolfe, the event organizer, explains that:

“Shimmer will be an important collaborative event, turning the area into a de facto art gallery.

It’s the first of its kind.”
