Cary Eagle Scout Wins Scholarship

Cary, NC – Out of more than 50 applicants for the role of Pope Eagle Scout Scholars, only five high schoolers were selected to receive the accompanying college scholarship, including one from Cary.

Scholarship for Achievement

Collin Thrash, a student at Ravenscroft and a Cary resident, was chosen for the Pope Eagle Scout Scholarship Program, which means a $20,000 scholarship for higher education.

Students who are eligible for the scholarship must have completed the rank of “Eagle Scout,” the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, and must have been a part or currently be a part of the Occoneechee Council, the Boy Scout council which includes Wake County.

“The achievement of a young man to earn his Eagle Scout Rank is a testimony to his ability to set a very challenging goal at a young age and work diligently to achieve this pinnacle award for Scouting,” said John Akerman, scout executive for the Occoneechee Council. “The young men selected to receive the Pope Eagle Scout Scholarship not only achieved in the Scouting program, but in school and other extra-curricular activities as well.”

In addition to his achievements in academics and the Boy Scouts, Thrash also works a freelance camera operator for Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and the Durham Bulls.

The Pope Eagle Scout Scholarship Program was started in 2001 by Raleigh businessman John William Pope who founded the Variety Wholesalers retail company.
