Weekend Events: Dance, Dogs and Baseball
Cary, NC – Now that June has started, the weather keeps getting sunnier, families are eating outside and there are a number of great events this weekend around Cary.
Thursday, June 2, 2016
Parent Chats are a way for Wake County families to ask questions and get information from Wake County Board of Education member Bill Fletcher. It starts at 1 PM at the Cary Chamber of Commerce on Academy Street. Meetings are the first Thursday of every month, though there will not be a “Parent Chat” on Thursday, July 7, 2016.
The final Live in the District concert of 2016 is this Thursday at 6 PM. Come hear live music from area musician Brittany Marie. The free event is in front of the theater at Park West Village and there are also activities for kids such as face painting and balloon art.
The Cary Theater is showing back-to-back movies about famous, counter-culture artists. First, at 7 PM, the theater is screening the documentary Hockney about the painter, photographer and designer David Hockney. Then, at 9:15 PM, there is a showing of the movie Born to be Blue, based on the life and work of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker, played by Ethan Hawke.

The Perimeter Park Business Expo is a great destination for any newcomers to North Carolina or the Triangle area. From 8:30 AM to 5 PM, this free conference will have information about competitors in the area, chances to network with other businesses and entrepreneurs as well as job training. There will also be free breakfast and dinner, all put on by PSCC. Space is limited so those interested should call 919-377-0031.
Pro-Ject is a modern hip-hop dance performance, produced by the Black Irish dance group. The show is a mix between live dancers working alongside pre-recorded, digitally projected dancers in this site-specific show. It begins at 7 PM at the Cary Theater and has a second date on Saturday, June 4, 2016.
The North Carolina Symphony is performing as part of SummerFest 2016. With conductor David Glover, the symphony will be playing jazz selections, as well as well known pieces from Gershwin. Accompanying the symphony will be the young Grammy nominee Joey Alexander and his three-piece band. Doors open at 5:30 PM at Booth Amphitheater.

Dog Days of June is a day of events and care for dogs. In addition to a frisbee-catching competition, there will be free dog washes courtesy of the Cary Teen Council. And, Cary Animal Control will be there with rabies vaccinations and tracking microchip injections available for a modest fee. When not competing, all dogs must be on a leash. The day starts at 9 AM at Bond Park.
Pig Pickin’ in the Park is having its 30th anniversary starting at 4:30 PM. There will be barbecue and music, with money going to the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club for donations. It’s all at the Senior Center in Bond Park.
The final game of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship is this Saturday. The game starts at 3 PM with tickets only $1 each. In the event of a rain delay, the game will move to 7 PM.

The Cary Theater is kicking off a series of films by the legendary director François Truffaut with Jules and Jim, following the multi-decade relationship between two friends. Anyone interested in seeing a seminal example of “French New Wave” cinema should come out to see the movie, playing at 2 PM.
The Kids Together Playground is holding its birthday celebration and is free and open to the public. There will be crafts, a marching parade, KATAL the KT dragon mascot, story time and fruit slushies. It is wheelchair and stroller accessible. The event will go from 3 to 5 PM at the Kids Together playground.
The Cary Playwrights Forum is giving people the opportunity to sit in on a reading for an upcoming play. The play is “Burt and Abbie” by local playwright Libby Heily, following two people who meet at an ice cream shop and try to work past their own personal demons. It is not appropriate for children. The staged reading starts at 3:30 PM and there is another reading on Friday, June 3, 2016. Details and tickets are on the Cary Playwrights Forum website.

Around The Triangle
Two Gentlemen of Verona will be performed at Deco Raleigh. This will be a modern twist on Shakespeare’s romantic comedy. The free show is going on both this weekend and next weekend, at 7 PM on Fridays and 3 PM on Saturday and Sunday.
The Special Olympics Summer Games for North Carolina is this weekend at Walnut Creek’s Music Park. Come out to support area athletes in this competition.
Bull City Blues is a new improv show in Durham with performers at the Common Ground Theater. The show is based on fictional police interactions with the various people of Bull City. The show starts at 8 PM on Friday, June 3, 2016.
