Weekend Events: Music, Arts and Soccer

Cary, NC – Last weekend saw us get hit by a lot of rain and lightning but the good news is the forecast looks clear and sunny for this week so here are some of the fun things to do this weekend around town.

Love to cook? There is a Pesto, Marinade and Vinaigrette class at vomFASS at Waverly Place. If you want to try making your own sauces for light, healthy cooking, the class starts at noon. Check out Waverly Place’s website or call 919-977-6745 for details on registration.

Introduction to Abstract Painting is a class at the Cary Arts Center all week long. Learn how to paint outside of realistic portrayals of nature and still life, with registration starting at 1 PM. Go to ericmcray.com for registration and details.

The Cary Photographic Artists hold their monthly meeting at The Cary Theater. At 7:30 PM, artists will share their work and get feedback from fellow photographers.

The Tedeshi Wheels of Soul Tour is making its stop at Koka Booth Amphitheater. Bands including Tedeschi Trucks Band, Los Lobos and North Mississippi All-Stars will be performing, starting at 7 PM.

The 21st Annual Frankie Yankovic Day Concert is at Page-Walker Arts Center at 7:30 PM. Cary’s Polka Plus Band will be performing at this free polka concert, promising fun for everyone.

Eliot Bronson, Kollin Baer and Jason Harrod will be performing at The Cary Theater. All three are accomplished acoustic musicians and beautiful singers, presented by Six String. The show starts at 8 PM.

Acoustic Nights in the District is going strong at Park West Village on the lawn in front of Stone Theater. This weekend, the performers at these free shows are Sarah Baumgarden on Friday, July 22 and Caroline Dare w/ Kaylin & Brooke on Saturday, July 23, 2016. All concerts start at 6 PM.

The 17th Annual Animation Show of Shows is having its final showing at the Cary Theater at 7 PM. There are 11 award-winning shorts from around the world, ranging from hilarious to beautifully touching, all with amazing feats of animation and artistic ability, plus insightful interviews with some of the creators.

DC Day is an event for fans of DC (not DC Comics because DC stands for “Detective Comics”) where Barnes & Noble will have special deals on comics from DC and have other activities and giveaways, including a chance to get a limited copy of “Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad #1 Special Edition.” The event starts at 7 PM at the Maynard Road Barnes & Noble.

Blue Hawaii is screening at The Cary Theater at 2 PM. It’s a classic Elvis Presley movie that precipitates a series of Presley Hawaii movies.

Voices of American Indian Culture: North Carolina’s Indigenous Natives and Culture is a discussion of North Carolina’s indigenous cultures and first nations, led by Christina Theodorou, from the UNC American Indian Center. It starts at 7 PM at the West Regional Library.

Around the Triangle

The Carolina RailHawks take on Miami FC this Friday, July 22 at WakeMed Soccer Park. The RailHawks play their first home game after the record-setting attendance at their game against West Ham United so go out and support our local team at the 7:30 PM game.

Armchair Traveler Series is a talk about art and tourism spots, this time specifically in Thailand. The event is led by Joseph Covington from the North Carolina Museum of Art, where the event is being held at 11 AM.

The Brightleaf Summer Concert Series are free, outdoor concerts at Brightleaf Square located at Gregson Street at Main Street in Durham. The show starts at 7 PM.
