Weekend Events: State Fair, Local Music and More

Cary, NC – After a long week of hard work, it’s nice to unwind with some fun. To help you find some fun, here is a shortlist of weekend events around Cary.

Thursday, October 20, 2016

It’s Ladies Night at Parkside Town Commons. From 6 to 9 PM, there are open houses at the shops at Parkside, as well as special deals, finger food, wine and more.

Cary High School is putting on a performance of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” from Thursday to Saturday at 7 PM. Come out to see Cary High students perform the Shakespeare comedy of romance and mistaken identity.

Dr. Damon Tweedy, a doctor and professor at Duke University, is doing a book reading and signing at Barnes & Noble on SW Maynard Road. Tweedy has written articles about race and medicine before and his book “Black Man in a White Coat” discusses these same topics, with the signing starting at 7 PM.

Parkside Town Commons

Acoustic Nights in the District is live acoustic music for free. Both Friday and Saturday, see local musicians perform on the lawn in front of Stone Theater at Park West Village at 6 PM.

Pierce Pettis and Tom Prasada-Rao will be performing at the Cary Theater. Both musicians have strong folk backgrounds, with Pettis mixing in rock and R&B. The show, starting at 8 PM, is presented by Six String.

The Whiskey Runners will be performing at Rudy’s Tavern on West Williams Street. Come out to see the local band play, starting at 8 PM.

Downtown Cary Fall Festival is an event at Bond Brothers Beer Company and organized by the Heart of Cary Association and the Town of Cary. There will be lots of arts and activities, including a performance by Chapel Hill band Southern Culture On The Skids. The event goes from noon to 10 PM.

Light the Night Walk is a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It takes place at Koka Booth Amphitheater and starts at 5:30 PM. There will be live music and other activities along with the walk.

The Carolina RailHawks are playing their final home game of the season against Minnesota United FC. The RailHawks need a strong showing in this game to get into the playoffs so go support the home team at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7:30 PM.

Cary has two Races on Sunday to raise money for local causes. There is a marathon at 408 Mills Park Dr. to raise money for Cary firehouses at 7 AM and a 5K at WakeMed Soccer Park to raise money for Harbor Reins at 9 AM.

For some early Safe Trick-or-Treating in the area, there will be a Trunk or Treat at Macedonia Baptist Church at 3 PM and a Fall Festival at Westwood Baptist Church at 5:30 PM.

Expressions VI is a live auction for pottery by local artist Ben Owen III. Money raised will benefit the Lucy Daniels Center, the nonprofit children’s mental and emotional health agency. Contact the Lucy Daniels Center to register for this event at the Umstead Hotel and Spa at 5:30 PM.

Around The Triangle

This is the final weekend of the State Fair. It ends on Sunday, running from 8 AM to midnight Thursday to Saturday and 8 AM to 11 PM on Sunday. There is a shuttle to the State Fair in the parking lot of Cary Towne Center.

Classic Canadian comedy group the Trailer Park Boys will be performing at the Durham Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 21, 2016.

BeagleFest is an event for dogs, put on by Triangle Beagle Rescue this Saturday, October 22. It runs from 1 to 4 PM at Durham’s Sunny Acres Pet Resort and has activities such as games, food, raffles and contest for categories such as best howl and best dog costume.
