Hurricane Irene: Notes for Neighbors

Cary, NC – I’ve brought in the plants, stocked up on food and filled the bathtubs with water in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Now here are some things you can do to be a good neighbor before, during and after the storm.

 

2 PM Friday Update

 

As of 2 PM on Friday, Irene’s center was about midway between Jacksonville, FL and Charleston, SC. Bands of rain and wind were beginning to be felt on the North Carolina coast from Brunswick County north to Emerald Island.

 

The storm is slogging north at about 14 mph and is supposed to make landfall near Beaufort on Saturday morning.  The projected path takes it north across Pamlico Sound and then back out to sea in a trajectory toward New York City.

 

Neighborliness in a Hurricane

 

Town of Cary Public Safety issued the following tips for the community:

  • Only call 9-1-1 with immediate threats to life, health, or property.
  • Do not attempt to deal with downed limbs or trees on a street or sidewalk on your own since they may be tangled in live power lines; instead, call the Town at (919) 469-4012.
  • Do not park on streets so that Town equipment and emergency vehicles can better service the area.
  • Be neighborly. Check on neighbors to make sure that everyone is OK.
