Cary, NC — The following report on the Wake County School Board District 9 candidate forum is from Karen Rindge, Executive Director of WakeUpWakeCounty.org, one of the organizers of the event. 

District 9 School Board Forum

Candidates for Wake school board District 9 participated in a non-partisan forum Monday night in Cary at the historic Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Downtown Cary.

The event was co-sponsored by WakeUP Wake County, the League of Women Voters of Wake, Delta Sigma Theta, and Congregations for Social Justice.

Citizens living in Cary can vote on the School Bond and for School Board Representative for District 9 on October 8.  That race is between incumbent Bill Fletcher and challenger Nancy Caggia.

Wake County School Bond

Candidates answered set questions from the moderator, as well as responded to many questions from the sixty people who attended.  Both Bill Fletcher and Nancy Caggia support the school bond.

“The most important thing we need to provide schools is to pass the school construction bond,” stated Fletcher.

School Board Issues

1. What To Change?

  • On the most important thing to change, Caggia said “is student achievement.”
  • Fletcher said:  improving relationships on the school board and with the county.

2. Common Core Curriculum

They both support the Common Core education system.

3. School Discipline

  • Nancy Caggia said “We need proper procedures, and we need equitable ways to treat all students.”
  • Fletcher said, “Number one has to be safety for the students and teachers.”  He noted that Wake County is trying a new program to address school discipline issues in which teachers are reflective about whether students’ needs are being met.

4. Increase School Funds?

When asked if they would be willing to advocate for increased school funds from Wake Board of Commissioners,

  • Fletcher said yes, he would.
  • Caggia said, “we need to come up with our strategic goals, then determine what areas need additional funding and seek for funds from either the county or the state.”

    That says all you need to know right there. Nancy believes the most important issue to be student achievement. I think most parents would agree.
