Corner Tavern Closes in Cary and Apex

corner tavern

Cary, NC — I heard a rumor from a reliable source last week that Corner Tavern had abruptly closed. Turns out to be true.

Corner Tavern Closed

The Corner Tavern and Grill in the Maynard Crossing shopping center (corner of Maynard and High House) was a popular neighborhood destination for inexpensive food, drink and fun.

They had live music every week and regular specials that made for a lively atmosphere.

I visited the Cary location on Sunday. Except for the locked doors in the middle of the afternoon, it all looked normal. Chairs stacked neatly on the tables, a chalk board full of specials and fans still spinning on the ceilings.

A return visit on Monday revealed a legal notice taped to the door.

The notice states that Corner Tavern has default on the provisions of their lease by “failing to make the monthly rental payments when due and for failing to open for business.”

Coincidentally (or not), a search on Corner Tavern’s longtime website (GoSitInTheCorner.com) shows the domain name has expired and not been renewed.

Corner Tavern in Beaver Creek

Corner Tavern had opened a second location in Beaver Creek Shopping Center in Apex. That location was also closed.

The Apex location had a sign on the window, but it was not a legal notice. It was a message to customers.

Corner Tavern’s two Facebook pages had no info whatsoever about the closure.

Filling a Void

Whatever the economics, Corner Tavern was a popular location in Cary. The closure leaves a bit of a void in the social scene.

It’s always unfortunate when a place that supports live music goes dark.

But, overall, the tavern and pub business in Cary is thriving, with more venues than ever spreading across town. Patrons of Corner Tavern might find comfort at Doherty’s, RallyPoint, West Park Grill or Back in the Day Cafe. Don’t forget Hibernian, Train Station Pub and Mahoney’s. Soon enough, Fortnight Brewing will be opening at Maynard and Old Apex.

I may have forgotten a pub or two in town, but it’s clear we’ll have ample places to drown our sorrows until something new comes along for Maynard Crossing.

I had heard from several folks about The Corner Tavern and shady dealings that had been going on there for a few years, so it’s no surprise to me it was shut down.
