Cary, NC — Three Girls Scouts from Cary have been awarded the Girl Scout Silver Award, which is the second highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The award symbolizes a Girl Scout Cadette’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and her community as she discovers her strengths and takes action to make the world a better place.

Read & Feed

For her Girl Scout Silver Award project, Shelby Exum of Cary partnered with Read and Feed, which tutors underprivileged children in reading skills and feeds them a nutritious meal. Exum hosted several book drives and collected gently used books for children in the program to take home and add to their personal book collection. Exum also helped recruit new volunteers for Read and Feed.

Exum is in the 9th grade and is the daughter of Jenny and Daniel Exum. She has been a Girl Scout since 2005, and is a member of Girl Scout Troop #1149 led by Tina Hammer. In addition to Girl Scouting, Exum is a member of the Cary Teen Council.

Compositing

For her Girl Scout Silver Award project, Sally Hammer of Cary designed and started two composting bins at the Jordan Oaks senior living community. She taught the manager and kitchen staff how to use the bins and handed out flyers to residents explaining her composting project. Hammer designed the flyers to raise education about composting and increase community participation.

Hammer is in the 9th grade and is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Philip Hammer. She has been a Girl Scout since 2004 and is a member of Girl Scout Troop #1149 led by Tina Hammer. In addition to Girl Scouting, Hammer is a member of 4-H and the YMCA Swim Team. She participates in dance and volunteers at the Wake County Animal Center and YMCA Camp.

AniMall Pet Adoption

For her Girl Scout Silver Award project, Gabriella Barcinas of Cary created informational brochures for AniMall Pet Adoption and Outreach Center. The brochures help people who have adopted animals from the center learn how to care for their new pet. The packets will be placed in folders to be sent home with new owners.

Barcinas is in the 9th grade and is the daughter of Mr. Gaspar and Mrs. Tanya Barcinas. She has been a Girl Scout since 2003 and is a member of Girl Scout Troop #1860 led by Wanda Schramm. In addition to Girl Scouting, Barcinas is active in soccer and cross-country running.
