Cary Student Wins at NC Science and Engineering Fair

Raleigh, NC — On March 29, fourth grader Ashleigh Smith from Chesterbrook Academy Elementary School in Cary won the Elementary Division of the 2014 North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair held at Meredith College.

Using Lichens as Indicators of Air Pollution

For her project, titled “Using Lichens as Indicators of Air Pollution,” Smith examined air pollution in different environments and discovered that lichens can be used to determine air quality. Over a period of four months, Smith discovered that environments lacking in lichens, which are organisms made up of algae and fungi, are more polluted.

NC Science and Engineering Fair

The NC Science and Engineering Fair provides an opportunity for students in third through 12th grades to pursue their personal areas of interest in science and technology and display their research as a presentation in a public competitive forum.
