Cary, NC — The Cary Town Council has chosen Sherry Scoggins to serve as the community’s next Town Clerk. She replaces Sue Rowland, who retired after over 30 years of public service, 22 of which have been with the Town of Cary.

Scoggins, 47, was selected from a pool of 159 candidates from as far away as California, Texas and New York. Currently, Scoggins serves as Town Clerk for the Town of Clayton. She will assume the position with the Town of Cary on July 28, 2014.

“On behalf of the entire Cary Town Council, I want to say how thrilled we are to have Sherry joining us in Cary,” said Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht.

“Our retiring Town Clerk Sue Rowland has set a tremendously high bar for her successor. The good news is that in addition to being supremely qualified, Sherry’s positive, energetic, and collaborative approach to finding a way to get almost anything done is exactly what we must continue to have in our Town Clerk.  Sherry is truly impressive and certain to be a perfect fit.”

The Town Clerk, who reports directly to the Town Council, is responsible for giving notice of Town Council meetings, preparing the Council agenda, recording Council proceedings, serving as custodian of all permanent town records, keeping the Town Seal, attesting all Town documents, maintaining the Town Code, managing the various Boards and Commissions, the administering of Hillcrest Cemetery, and providing support services to the Town Council.

Staff includes the town clerk, the deputy town clerk and two administrative assistants.

This position is just one of three hired directly by the Council, the others being the Town Manager and the Town Attorney.

“I am very honored to be chosen as the next Town Clerk for the Town of Cary,” said Scoggins. “The Town of Cary is very supportive of the Town Clerk and what the Town Clerk does for Town.  It is the support that makes serving as the Town Clerk rewarding and I look forward to serving the Town of Cary.”

Scoggin holds a dual Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management of Human Resources from Barton College, Wilson, North Carolina and an Associate in Arts from Louisburg College, Louisburg, North Carolina.

She has served as the Town Clerk for the Town of Clayton since 2003. Prior to this role, Scoggin was the Executive Secretary for Wake County – Public Safety/Fire-Rescue Division and the City of Raleigh Police Chief’s Secretary.

Scoggin is a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks, and is a certified Master Municipal Clerk and North Carolina Notary Public.
