Cary, NC — This weekend proves to be one for the families, according to the Calendar of Events, with tons to keep the kids entertained along with the opening of the NC State Fair.

Thursday night enjoy the Western Wake Orchestra Festival at 7 pm. The production includes multiple schools’ string orchestras in Wake County perform. Bands range in age from middle to high school level bands. The event will be held at Green Hope High School, and it is free.

Chatham Hill Winery holds its customary Wine Tasting this Friday Chatham Hill Winery holds its customary Wine Tasting this Friday with wine available for purchase by the glass and bottle. In addition to wine, locally crafted beer can be had. There is a $3 cover charge at the door with a $6 option for a “mini-wine tasting”. The event starts at 5 pm.

The Cary Youth Theater presents its production of Around the World in 80 Days. This weekend, there will be three showings with the first being this Friday starting at 7:30 at the Cary Arts Center. Come out and support the budding actors in Cary.

At 11 in the morning this Saturday, Cary Diwali comes to Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Diwali is an Indian holiday and it will be celebrated with traditional dances as well as food and handicrafts. The largest Indian festival of its kind in the southeast, Cary Diwali is worth a look.

The Third Annual Downtown Harvest Festival opens this Saturday with fun for the whole family. Starting at 2 pm, the festival will go on to 6. Kid’s wristbands are available at $2 a pop while adults can get in for free. Costumes are welcome.

Doherty’s is hosting its Second Anniversary Block Party Saturday evening. The event boasts of two live bands, a late night DJ and a Sam Adams Stein Hoisting competition. The party starts at 4 in the afternoon and should last well until midnight.

Across the Triangle

The North Carolina State Fair opens up this Thursday for a preview day beginning at 2, with full day hours starting on Friday. If you’re like me, you probably find your mouth-watering, imagining all that good food only a few days away. Not to mention the rides and other attractions for all you adrenaline junkies, as well as petting zoos and the like for the little ones. So, saddle up folks, it’s time to make your way down Hillsborough Street for all the good times that await you at the NC Fair Ground. Vanilla Ice performs on opening night.

Tir na Nog hosts its Oktoberfest Run Green 8k. Get a great run in, a free beer and a chance to win a $3000 travel voucher. There will be an after party at Moore Square with games and music.

At DPAC in Durham, the Phantom of the Opera continues it’s showing. Tickets range between $45 – $150 with performances through this Sunday.
