Weekend: The Cary Christmas Parade & Five Tons of Snow

Cary, NC — According to the CaryCitizen Calendar, this weekend is packed with many winter events. Bundle up, because whether you are in search of holiday happenings or are simply looking for fun nearby, there is something certain to get everyone out of the house this weekend.

Thursday, December 11, 2014

A free-throw contest will be held at the Bond Park Community Center from 6:30-9:30 pm on Thursday evening. The event, Elk’s Hoop Shoot, gives girls and boys from ages 8-13 a chance to qualify for competitions leading to a national championship.

At 7:30 pm, the 40-man General Assembly Chorus of the Barbershop Harmony Society will present Songs of the Season at the Cary Arts Center.

A Holiday Potluck Celebration will be held at the Cary Senior Center from 11:30 am-2 pm on Friday. This event for ages 55+ includes lunch and special entertainment–bring a dish to share and a wrapped gift for the gift exchange. Later at the Senior Center, be sure to check out Cary Town Band’s annual Winterfest, compete with a sing-along, at 7:30 pm.

Want to try something different? The Annandale Center, a Scottish dance studio in Downtown Cary, is hosting their Free Dance Friday from 4-7 pm. The event will be held on the second Friday of every month.

At 6 pm, Mosaic Church in Cary is hosting a free sledding/carnival event for the public with 5 tons of snow. At the same time, families can enjoy Magical Lights at Park West Village, complete with a lights show, hot chocolate, and lots of activities for kids. If you can’t make it out to Park West tonight, no worries–the show continues nightly until Dec. 21.

The American Legion’s Pancake Breakfast, Crafts, & Baked Goods Sale runs from 8-11 am on Saturday morning–all proceeds go to help wounded soldiers and their families.

Need some alone time to shop? Drop your kids over age 3 off at College Nannies & Tutors from 1-5 pm, where they will be entertained with games and crafts. Then, from 5-8 pm, a similar event is going on at Team Attraction Gymnastics. The Green Hope Women’s Gymnastics team will treat children to pizza and active fun in the gym. Cost for both is $20 for first child.

A “Toast” to the Holidays is going on at Chapel Hill Winery from 12-6pm on Saturday. For only $10, participants can take a tour, sample wine, and enter a raffle. And, at 2, the Cary Christmas Parade sponsored by the Cary Jaycees will start Downtown.

Wrap up your night with some holiday events–the Concert Singers of Cary will present Holiday Pops with the Moonlight Orchestra, and the International Ballet Academy will put on their performance of The Nutcraker. Find times, ticket info, and more fun in the Holiday Event Guide.

Downtown Cary’s Food & Flea Holiday Market will be open from noon to 4 pm on Sunday. Come out for local craft beer, food trucks, vintage goods, artists, crafts, music, and more.

After, the Raleigh Boychoir’s Millennium Chorus will be performing at Page-Walker from 4-5 pm. Choir members of ages 7-14 will be singing holiday classics.

Across the Triangle

A Capitol Tree Lighting at the NC Museum of History will take place in Downtown Raleigh on 5 E Edenton Street from 5-7:30 pm. Seasonal music and hands-on fun await you.

“Annie” the Musical is at the Durham Performing Arts Center daily until December 14, 2014. Tickets are $30 and showtimes vary, so check the DPAC website for more information.

The Art of Giving Gallery, located at 121 N. Churton Street in Hillsborough, showcases giftable art for the holiday season from 22 painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers, and more. The gallery is open daily until January 4, 2015.
