Editor’s Journal: Academy St. Groundbreaking & More
Editor’s Note: The weekly editor’s journal is a collection of photos, thoughts and events from last week that didn’t make it into a story of their own.
Cary, NC — Last week was a big week in Cary. To document the events, in this editor’s journal, we’ll share photos of the Academy Street Groundbreaking and of the Ritmo Latino festival.
Celebrate the Street
Thursday, May 28, 2015 marked the groundbreaking for the Academy Streetscape construction project, and the Town of Cary threw a street party to celebrate. Cary Town Band, Bull Town Strutters and three other bands entertained the crowd and led them in a parade all the way down Academy Street, from Chatham Street to the Arts Center.
Patrons were able to write down their memories of the old downtown and to take photos as keepsakes, and Councilmen Jack Smith and Don Frantz “broke the street” with help from the crowd. Ted Boyd, Downtown Development Manager, said:
The view and ambiance of Academy Street is often cited as an element that makes downtown Cary unique. It has been the home of community parades and festivals for decades and has been the front door to many businesses, homes and places of worship. This renovation project will enhance the natural aesthetics and update the half century old infrastructure while creating an improved pedestrian experience.
Ritmo Latino
On Saturday, May 30, 2015, the streets of Downtown Cary were filled with dancers, music, food and crafts from different countries for Diamante’s annual Ritmo Latino festival–and it was the best one yet. Enjoy these colorful photos of the lively event.
