Weekend: Snow, Wine Tastings & More

Cary, NC — This weekend on the calendar, we found a snow event at Waverly Place, family-friendly shows, improv competitions, a wine-tasting event at Academy Street Bistro, a Cary Invasion home game and more.

Wine Nights at the Bistro are reoccurring wine tasting events at Academy Street Bistro in downtown Cary. This Thursday, at 6:30 pm, you’ll identify and define key Italian wines and learn how to order and pair them with food. $30 per person includes wine and hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Brian. Reservations are encouraged, so call 919-377-0509.

Ready to start a business? Take an Introduction to Entrepreneurship class at West Regional Library at 6:30 pm to learn about researching the market and competitors, securing funds and projecting results.

Weekend Events

Eat dinner at Jason’s Deli in Crossroads Plaza tonight (between 5 pm – 10 pm) to help raise money for Dorcas Ministries. Simply drop your receipt in the donation box at the restaurant, and 15% of your meal will be donated to the cause.

Missed the Academy Street Bistro wine tasting event last night? No worries. Chatham Hill Winery hosts their weekly Wine Away Friday event tonight, which means live music, snacks and games until 10 pm.

It’s also Live Music Friday at Fortnight Brewery. This week, there will be live music from Roger Maudlin starting at 7 pm. There’s no cover for this show, and the Bull City Street Food food truck will be back.

Family Trivia Night starts at 7 pm at the Bond Park Community Center – answer questions about music, television, sports, history and more. Prizes will be rewarded each round and small snacks will be provided during the event. Space is limited and pre-registration through the Town of Cary is required ($7 per person).

Cary High School is hosting an Improv Night at 7 pm in their auditorium. Admission is just $2.

Cary’s Winter Wonderland continues all day today on the big hill at Bond Park.

Bond Park too crowded? Try a similar event, Snow Day at Waverly Place, from 11 am – 3 pm. Come check out how snow is made and play in the snow on the promenade. Snow play is free for all and will include a dusting in the toddler playground for little ones. There will be free snow-themed crafts, special treats for kids and pups from Johnson Subaru, warm seasonal drinks and adult beverages and more. Adults can catch specials from Waverly businesses.

This year’s free Improv Competition featuring multiple NC high schools is Saturday from 12 – 4 pm at Cary High.

Then, the Cary Invasion will take on Charlotte at 7 pm in the Herb Young Community Center.

Across the Triangle

The Extreme Mammals exhibit is up now at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh. The exhibition features spectacular fossils, vivid reconstructions, taxidermy and life-like models-including a 15-foot-high model of the extinct Indricotherium, the largest land mammal known to date. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 13.

Durham’s Winter Food Truck Rodeo is Sunday, January 24, 2016 from Noon – 4 pm in Durham Central Park. The event will feature live music from multiple bands, 50+ food trucks and local craft beer.

Spend an interactive, art-filled afternoon with family and friends exploring the Ackland Art Museum’s newly opened exhibition Walls of Color: The Murals of Hans Hofmann on Sunday from 1-5 pm. Admission is free during this time.
