Virginia Johnson Named Cary’s New Town Clerk

Cary, NC — On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, Cary Town Council announced that Virginia Johnson has been appointed as Cary’s new Town Clerk. 

Cary Appoints New Town Clerk

Virginia Johnson will be sworn in as Cary’s new Town Clerk during Thursday’s council meeting. Johnson, who has served as Cary’s Interim Town Clerk since January 2016, first joined the Town of Cary in 2013. She will replace Sherry Scoggins, Cary’s former Town Clerk, who left Cary late last year to work as the special assistant to the Town Manager in Wendell.

The Town Clerk is responsible for giving notice of council meetings, preparing the council agenda, recording council proceedings, serving as a custodian of permanent Town records, keeping the Town Seal, attesting all Town documents, maintaining the Town Code, managing the citizen advisory boards and commissions and providing support services to the Town Council. The Town Clerk’s office includes the town clerk, the deputy town clerk and two administrative assistants.

The Town Clerk position is one of three positions hired directly by council. “Since her appointment as Interim Town Clerk, the Town Council has been impressed with Virginia’s ability to step quickly into the role and manage the responsibilities associated with it,” said Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht. “We look forward to working with her.”

Johnson was selected from a pool of 119 applicants, some coming from other states. Johnson earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC. She is a member of the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks Association and serves on the membership and legislative committees.

She is also a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and is enrolled in the Universty of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Government Clerks’ Certification Institute.

In a Town of Cary press release, Johnson explained:

As one of the oldest public servants in the history of town government, the clerk role – like the Town – has a rich past. I look forward to continuing the tradition of serving our citizens and elected officials and contributing to this community.
