Local Schools Participate in Walk to School Day

Cary, NC – Several local elementary schools participated in the yearly Walk to School event to build cohesiveness and promote physical activity.

Take a Walk

Walk to School Day took place Wednesday, October 5, 2016 with eight elementary schools from around Cary participating.

  • Mills Park Elementary
  • Highcroft Drive Elementary
  • Davis Drive Elementary
  • Weatherstone Elementary
  • Northwoods Elementary
  • Green Hope Elementary
  • Farmington Woods Elementary
  • Penny Road Elementary

Walk to School Day is part of a nationwide effort to get more kids active while also promoting an environmentally-friendly way to travel. The event also teaches children about safe ways to walk through the town and watch for traffic.

Most schools had some sort of program to go along with the walk, having the students gather at one location before school started to get kids to do activities, hear from police and other officials about safety and then walk to school. For example, Weatherstone Elementary School organized a parade to their school from White Tiger Tae Kwon Do on NW Maynard Road and were led by Wake County Commissioner Jessica Holmes.

The same national group that created Walk to School also has a Bike To School event that took place earlier this year, with Cary schools also taking part in that.
