Weekend Events: Diwali, Fundraisers and More

Cary, NC – You can feel the change in the air as we officially move into Autumn and the colder part of the year. But if you bundle up, you can still go out and enjoy some fun weekend events around Cary.

Thursday, October 13, 2016

The SAS Championships are this weekend. You can go out and watch top players on the golf course. Plus, on various days of the championships, there will also be food trucks and activities for children and families. The games take place at Prestonwood Country Club with details and times on the SAS Championship website.

The Wake County Board of Commissioners are holding a candidate forum at 7 PM. If you are planning on voting, come out and see your candidates for the board talk about the issues and make their case. Candidates representing Cary and Morrisville will be there but it takes place at Estey Hall Auditorium at Shaw University in Raleigh.

Scary Movies are playing at the Cary Theater all October long. Every Thursday and Saturday you can catch a different movie, starting this weekend with the humorous Therapy for a Vampire at 7 PM and the much less funny Texas Chainsaw Massacre at 9 PM.

The Annandale Center is holding a free dance for anyone interested in their Scottish dance style or who are already familiar. It takes place at 4 PM at the Annandale Center on 406 Faculty Dr.

Chatham Street Wine Market is holding a special pop-up dinner where four courses will be paired specifically with four wines from Beckman Vineyards and owner Jeff Beckman will also be there to discuss the wines. All food will be made by local chef Jimmy Chhay and it takes place at 7 PM with registration on their website.

Rachel Flowers will be performing at the Cary Arts Center at 7:30 PM. Flowers is an accomplished pianist and flutist with both a classical and jazz background.

The Ellie Helton Memorial is a 5K and silent auction to raise money for research and awareness for brain aneurysms. It takes place at WakeMed Soccer Park starting at 8 AM with registration on their website.

Yoga for Donate Life NC is a fundraiser for the organ donation non-profit Donate Life NC. This is an hour-long yoga class that will teach healing postures and poses and it takes place at Simply Practice 312 W Chatham St. at 9:30 AM.

Diwali, the Hindu celebration of lights, will have its celebration in Cary at Koka Booth Amphitheater. There will be Indian music, dance, art and food, starting at 11 AM. It is free and open to the public.

All weekend, there is a Vintage Jewelry Show at Joint Venture Jewelry on 250 Grande Heights Dr. You can see jewelry from the 1800s or the Art Deco period and buy some as well. You can come in from 11 AM to 6 PM.

Garden Supply Co. is holding a class on how to make miniature fairy gardens and terrariums. You can bring a container or get one from the store. It starts at 2 PM with registration on their website.

State Fair9

Around The Triangle

The State Fair kicks off this Thursday, October 13, 2016. On opening day, it starts at 3 PM but is open at 8 AM on the other days. The State Fair runs until Sunday, October 23, 2016 and takes place at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.

The North Carolina Symphony will be playing famous film scores at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh on Thursday and Friday, October 13 and 14, 2016. The shows start at 8 PM.

The World Beer Festival will have more than 250 beers available for tasting with seminars and presentations as well. It takes place at Durham Bulls Stadium on Saturday, October 15, 2016.
