Young Artists Awarded at Paint the Page

Cary, NC – After bringing together young artists from around Cary, the Page-Walker Arts and History Center gave out several awards and cash prizes to the works that reflected the influence of the center’s history and design.

“Paint the Page” started with an event on Sunday, October 2, 2016 where young artists, aged 13 to 19, had the opportunity to show how the Page-Walker Center inspired them. That could be from the building itself, the garden outside, the historic artifacts inside or the history the center represented.

Twenty-two artists came out on that Sunday to create artworks using a variety of media from painting to drawing to crafting and more, all hosted by Young Friends of the Page-Walker.

Then, on Sunday, October 9, 2016, there was a reception where visitors could see the art created during the past week’s event. The reception also saw the artists get various awards for their work.

Best In Show went to Michael DiGruccio, a senior at Cary High School, for his painting “The Corner Path.”

“The zig-zag path to the front porch caught my eye when I first passed it. Setting myself up underneath the patio created a strong contrast between the house and the lawn,” DiGruccio said about his painting. “I used micron and some ink wash to create value, using brown archival ink for highlight.”

The other awards given were:

Best Use of Media – Karuna Gangwani

Best Use of Detail – Madison Cross Sugg

Most Unique Perspective – Gengyi Li

Best Draftsmanship – Jeehe Han

Best En Plein Aire – Sean Haley

Best Emotional Impact – Ken Wear

All award-winners received $50 with Best In Show getting $100. The money was raised from this year’s Herbfest bake sale, run by Friends of Page-Walker teen council member Sarah Welsch.
