Events: This Sunday, Making Dough for Y Scholarships

Cary, NC – This Sunday, October 30, 50 swimmers from the Y’s YOTA team will be baking bread, muffins and more to raise money for scholarships. It’s a great story of giving back, and you can help from 10am to 3 pm.

Giving Back

Five years ago when Paige and Tom Williams started Great Harvest Bread in Cary, it made money tight at home. “Like all small business owners, we were full of excitement and optimism.  We both worked full time and long hours in the store the first few years only to yield minimal sales.  We exhausted our reserve capital and our savings.  We had tough decisions ahead.  One financial decision was whether we could afford to have our children continue in the YMCA Competitive Swimming program. ”

It was with heavy hearts that they approached the Y for assistance, and were thrilled that the organization came through for them.

Paige and Tom understand how the Y can help others who cannot afford to participate in the wonderful programs that the organization provides. For that reason this Sunday Great Harvest Bread is giving back and the Swim Team helps make it a group effort.

Swimmers Helping Swimmers

Approximately 50 athletes will be hanging up their goggles and donning aprons this Sunday to bake an assortment of breads. 100% of the proceeds from that day go directly to the  YOTA Financial Aid Program.  This fund financially assists swimmers involved in the competitive swimming program in all of the YMCA’s in the Triangle.

Last year they baked up $3400, and the goal this weekend is to raise at least $5000.

Swimmers arrive at 7am to mix and scoop muffins and scones including their famous Pumpkin Chocolate Chip bread.  They hand knead Cinnamon Chip bread, Honey Whole Wheat and other breads, baking between 600-700 loaves of bread. They then packaged and sold the bread, complete with running the cash register!  The added benefit is that they got the opportunity to really understand how a small business works.
