Cary Super Skippers Become US National Champs

Cary, NC — The Cary YMCA Superskippers bested more than 50 teams to become the national jump rope champions at a recent competition in Long Beach, California.

The Cary YMCA Superskippers won first place in overall speed events, first place in overall freestyle events and tied for first place team in the country to become the 2012 USA Jump Rope national champions last week in Long Beach, California. Full results at USAjumprope.org.

The team practices their routines and technique at the Cary YMCA, and tumbles at Apex Gymnastics. Last summer members of the team traveled to China to be a part of a Guinness Record Book event. The team continues to be garner numerous awards around the Nation.

The team qualified for 22 events in the USA Jump Rope Grand Nationals in June, where top scorers across all age groups competed against one another. Here’s how they placed:

Grand National Awards:

  • Graham Booth — Third place, Male Single Rope Speed
  • Hannah Butler, Becca Purser, Ellen Emmerson — First place, Female Double Dutch Single Freestyle
  • Hannah Butler, Ellen Emmerson, Alex Davis-Isaac, Catherine Shaw — Second place, Female Double Dutch Pairs Freestyle
  • Ashleigh Steadman — Second place, Individual All-Around Female 12-under
  • Graham Booth — First place, Individual All-Around Male 13-14
  • Matthew Russell — Second place, Individual All-Around Male 13-14

Three overall team first place awards:  Team Speed, Team Freestyle, and overall First place Team (tie).

In competition by age group there were many team members that placed in the top three for their group. Among them were:

  • Male Single Rope Speed:  (13-14) First – Graham Booth, Third – Nick Higgins
  • Female Single Rope Speed (10-under) Second – Renee Ellis; (11-12) Third – Camille Ellis
  • Single Rope Speed Relay (12-under) First – Camille Ellis, Renee Ellis, Zoe Ellis, Ashleigh Steadman
  • (13-14) First – Graham Booth, Hannah Lewis, Ashlyn Worthington, Madison McClellan; (13-14) Second – Hannah Hendren, Hailey Haymond, Nick Higgins, Matthew Russell
  • Male 3-Minute Speed  (13-14) Second – Graham Booth
  • Male Single Rope Freestyle (13-14) First – Matthew Russell, Second – Graham Booth
  • Female Single Rope Freestyle  (11-12) First – Ashleigh Steadman; (13-14) Third – Madison McClellan, (15-17) Second – Kristin Andrejko, Third – Jessie Robinson, (23-29) Third – Catherine Jones
  • Single Rope Pairs Freestyle (12-under) First – Morgan Johnson and Ashleigh Steadman
  • Double Dutch Speed Relay (13-14) Second – Morgan Adams, Graham Booth, Nicole Enright
  • Double Dutch Pairs Speed (12-under) Second – Carly Brockman, Zoe Ellis, Morgan Johnson, Ashleigh Steadman,  (13-14) First – Morgan Adams, Graham Booth, Nick Higgins, Matthew Russell
  • Double Dutch Singles Freestyle (12-under) Second – Zoe Ellis, Morgan Johnson, Ashleigh Steadman; (13-14) Third – Graham Booth, Nick Higgins, Matthew Russell;
  • Female Double Dutch Singles Freestyle (15-17) Third – Hannah Butler, Ellen Emmerson, Becca Purser
  • Double Dutch Pairs Freestyle (12-under) First – Carly Brockman, Zoe Ellis, Morgan Johnson, Ashleigh Steadman,  (13-14) First – Morgan Adams, Graham Booth, Nicole Enright, Matthew Russell; (13-14) Third – Ashley DeNardo, Natalie Ellis, Hannah Lewis, Katlyn Purser
  • Female Double Dutch Pairs Freestyle (15-17) First – Hannah Butler, Alex Davis-Isaac, Ellen Emmerson, Catherine Shaw

Cary’s team consists of only 60 athletes who must try-out to become a part of the nationally recognized team. The jump rope sport is practiced year round with competitions typically heating up in the Spring and Summer. Good Luck Super Skippers as you defend your title next year!
