Fall Gardening: When to Reseed Your Lawn

Story by Hal Goodtree. Photo by Jon Large.

Cary, NC – The long, dry, hot spell in early July left a lot of brown patches in my lawn. I will be reseeding this year. But timing is everything when it comes to lawns. Here’s my best advise for when to reseed a lawn in Cary.

When to Reseed Your Lawn

There are lots of places to find info on how to reseed lawns. What I want to tak about is the timing – specifically, when to reseed in Cary.

My experience has been that lawn reseeding takes place too late in Cary. Maybe it’s my own laziness, but October is too late for maximum benefit.

The maximum growth period seems to be September. I’m thinking of reseeding no later than Sunday, September 9 this year.Maybe as early as September 1 if the weather is cool and it looks to be wet.

BTW – it’s not really air temperature that regulates the growth of grass. It’s soil temperature. No matter how hot the days, the diminishing hours of sunlight lead to a fall in soil temperature. That triggers the grass to grow.

Mark my words: early September is the sweet spot for reseeding lawns in Cary.

Fall Gardening Series

Over the next few weeks, I’ll do a Fall Gardening Series – a handful of stories that will keep you in the groove on a great garden in Cary.

Thank you for this info! This is EXACTLY the kind of thing I’ve been waiting for — I can do a lot of things, very complex things, but taking care of a lawn, well, my thumbs aren’t green in the slightest. This is very helpful! Please keep it up!
