Oyez! Oyez! – Cary Town Crier Visits for Lazy Daze

Story by Barbara Shepard, President of Sister Cities of Cary. Photo by Hal Goodtree.

Cary, NC- Cary’s official Town Crier is coming to town to help kick off Lazy Daze.  What, you didn’t know that Cary has a Town Crier?  Thanks to the Sister Cities of Cary Association‘s relationship with Markham, Canada, we do. He’ll be here this week for three special events.

Cary’s Town Crier

John Webster and his real (and official Town Crier) wife Mary live in Markham and have been coming down to Cary for Lazy Daze and other Town events since around 2003.  You really can’t miss him when he’s in his official red Town Crier regalia.  John and Mary came down last year to help inagurate the new Cary Arts Center and were prepared to help kick off Lazy Daze when the hurricane changed their plans.

John says “We love to come down to Cary.  Anytime you need us to help with an event, just let us know.”

If you make your way to the corner of Chatham and Academy on Saturday at 8:45 am, you can see and hear him ring in this year’s Lazy Daze festival.  John and Mary will be very visible around the festival for the rest of the day, so keep your eyes peeled.  Who knows – he may know the location of one of the “Little Jerry” dolls that the Festival’s Committee will have hidden around the festival site.

Rocking the Town Council and a Reception at Page-Walker

The Websters are arriving on Thursday, August 23rd. John will also help the Town Council meeting that night get off to a rousing start before heading over to the Page Walker Arts & History Center for a meet and greet reception ($5) sponsored by the Sister Cities Association of Cary.  This event is open to everyone in Cary (and the Greater Cary area).

Watch the beginning of the August 23, 2012 Town Council meeting on the Town Website or on the Town’s new YouTube Channel. You can see why John Webster is a great Town Crier for the Town of Cary and for the Town (now City) of Markham. John’s comments about Cary are truly heartfelt.

Please come out to Lazy Daze and meet *our* Town Crier. If I know John, he will be on the streets all day to meet with you!

John and Mary Webster are great Ambassadors for our sister city of Markham, CANADA (FYI, Toronto is a suburb of Markham!)
