Cary, NC — Read & Feed recently was awarded a $25,000 Ribbon of Hope grant from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation to support its literacy program.

Read & Feed Fleet Grows with Glaxo Award

The grant will be used to transform a newly purchased RV into a mobile classroom designed to serve additional program sites in Eastern Wake County. Acquired with funding by the Wake Women’s Giving Network, the new RV is the third in the Read and Feed fleet. The vehicle requires a complete interior overhaul for use in their literacy program.

Using customized mobile classrooms, Read and Feed travels directly to low-income communities, serving at-risk students in Wake County Public Schools in an after-school program. The program provides meals to eliminate hunger, tutors to help children read, and books to build home libraries. For many children, these are the first and only books they own.

“We go to communities where families are limited in their ability to provide the time, transportation, or resources to help their child make gains in reading,” said Jan Frantz, Founder and President of Read and Feed. “By bringing books, tutors, and food to children in need, we demonstrate that we are a community who cares.”

In less than eight years, the Read and Feed program has expanded to 20 program sites, serving more than 500 children each year.
