Cary, NC — Despite the weather’s best attempts to cancel a second Town Council Meeting this month, the group forged ahead with the two combined agendas of the Feb. 9 and 20 meetings Thursday night.
Monday I joined council members Smith, Yerha, and Liu as well as several Cary staff members at the Mayors Association holiday dinner in Wake Forest. All participants paid their way except the mayors whose dinner was included in their annual dues. There were about 150 people in attendance.
The annual tree lighting in Downtown Cary always brings a lot of festivities with it and this past year was no different. Look back on the 2019 tree lighting with photographs taken by Brooke Meyer.
Cary has its annual big Downtown Christmas celebration this weekend, with Santa’s Workshop, the Victorian Christmas at the Page-Walker Center, all culminating with the tree lighting. Also this weekend, you can see the Cary Players’ new production and the Cary Community Choir holds their 49th performance of Handel’s “Messiah.”
For the fourth year, Cary residents can try some of the best chili in the state and vote for their favorites in this new annual tradition.
Cary Fit Project, now open in Downtown Cary, looks to approach fitness by balancing and coordinating the physical, mental and emotional parts of a person’s life, backed by experience from the world of professional sports.
Cary is set to see several major projects in the coming years, as a recent Town of Cary work session detailed the Academy Park Cary site to wrap Cary Regional Library and the Northwoods Associates project adjacent to First Baptist Church.
Monday night I attended a meeting of the Wake County Mayors Association. Eight mayors were in attendance. Mayors not attending were Apex, Knightdale, Morrisville, and Wendell. The first speaker was the Executive Director of InterAct who talked about the need for more municipal partnerships. The second speaker was the Wake County School Board chairman who fielded questions and talked about naming schools and school assignments. The current Wake County School board has adopted a policy to not name schools after municipalities and instead name them after regions. He also mentioned the need for educational diversity and stated to me that Panther Creek may change in the future. I responded with “Good luck with that” since Panther Creek and all Cary schools have a very strong parent base. The meeting of the mayors lasted about two hours.
Opening in early 2020, Di Fara Pizza Tavern is a new restaurant in Downtown Cary with by-the-slice pizza and specially treated water to give it the authentic New York Pizza taste.
There was lots of business news across Cary this month, including new businesses announced at Fenton, new stores opening across shopping centers in town and several major companies have big news in town.
