Cary Cycling Race Pictures

Brian Speice Photography-5Cary, NC — We sent our summer photo intern, the fabulous Brian Speice, to take some pictures of Cary’s first “closed loop” cycling race downtown.

The race, called the Orange Star Criterium, was put on by Town of Cary and Cycling Spoken Here. Big ups to both of these fine organizations for expanding the envelope in Cary.

But information has been scarce for the general public. Is it a secret? Readers are invited to browse our sources in case more details become available.

Cary Photo Journal: Road Trip to Pittsburgh & Ohio

road-trip-pittsburghCary, NC – A couple of weeks ago, our photo intern Brian Speice took a road trip to Pittsburgh and Ohio. We said “bring your camera.”

A Cary Point of View

Of course, people from Cary travel all the time, all over the world. Some of them take pictures. Some, like Brian, are really good photographers.

Which raises the question, do Cary-ites have a particular point of view? Do we see the world a certain way? Is there a “Cary-school?”

Lest you think, dear readers, that we are just gilding the lily, you’ll recall that we’ve done other photo essays by Cary-ites abroad – in Berlin, New York, New Dehli and elsewhere.

Add this one to the Cary Road Journal collection.

From photographer Brian Speice:

“Hal, Here are 14 of my favorite pictures from my trip! Other than the first three (traveling pictures) and the last one (shot in Ohio), they were shot around Pittsburgh (where we had the most time to just walk around and do street photography).”

Photo Essay: Collins Grove Development

collins-grove-2

Story and photos by Hal Goodtree.

Cary, NC – Dirt is turning at a project called Collins Grove in west-central Cary. We’ve got a few pictures as the earth movers move-in to capitalize on Cary’s hot housing market.

Collins Grove

Collins Grove, a town home development project of Standard Pacific, sits behind Davis Drive Elementary at the intersection of Collins Road and Waldo Rood Blvd. It occupies a small piece of land across from the railroad tracks behind the Upchurch Farms neighborhood. See Collins Grove on a map.

In the pictures, you may notice that the old farmhouse is up on jacks, presumably to be moved to another location.

Signage on the property indicates Collins Grove will be open in the Fall of 2013.

Editor’s Journal: A Weekend in Pictures

wheels-on-academy

Story and photo by Hal Goodtree.

Cary, NC – This past weekend, I managed to get around to three interesting events in the greater Cary region: CenterStage on the front lawn of DPAC in Durham, Wheel on Academy in downtown Cary and Morrisville’s East Meets West festival.

CenterStage

Friday evening was perfect for CenterStage, a collaboration between WUNC’s Back Porch Music and the American Tobacco Historic District in Downtown Durham.

A large and enthusiastic crowd turned out for the first show of the summer. I ran into several friends from Cary and got to take a few shots from the rooftop of  Diamond View II, one large office buildings between DPAC and Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Find out about more free CenterStage concerts this summer.

Wheels on Academy

Saturday morning, I swung by Wheels on Academy in Downtown Cary.

Last year’s inaugural event was a little soggy, but Saturday morning was crisp and clear in downtown Cary. More than 100 cars participated.

My favorites were Barney Fife’s vintage Ford police cruiser, a beautiful plum-colored Studebaker, an immaculate California woody and a low slung hot rod Don Frantz identified for me as a class of cars called a “Rat Ride.” All the cars were gorgeous.

East Meets West

Finally, I wound up at Morrisville’s East Meets West Festival. Booths lined Town Hall Drive and two stages showcased Eastern and Western acts.

I was there to perform on the West stage with A Fifth of Blues, but I also had a chance to wander around a little.
