Lowes Supermarket Closing Cary Store

lowes supermarketCary, NC – The Lowes Supermarket at the corner of Davis and High House will close on September 14, 2013.

Lowes Supermarket Pulling Out of Cornerstone

Just 10 days ago, we wrote about the new Publix coming to Cary and the larger “Supermarket Wars” raging across the town.

The new Publix will be literally across the street, at the very same intersection of Davis and High House. A Harris Teeter also occupies the same corner.

As well, Lowes has a store just up the road at Cary Parkway and High House – the so-called “Hanna-Lowes” because the store used to be a Hannaford.

More than Publix, the Supermarket Wars in Cary have brought more offerings, especially in the high and low ends. Stores in the middle, like Lowes, have a tough time against more upscale markets like Harris Teeter and Whole Foods as well as stiff competition at the low end against Aldi and Walmart.

Lowes Foods, based in Winston-Salem, has about 100 stores across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

According to a press release (subsequently unpublished), employees at the Cary location would be offered opportunities at other Triangle locations in Cary, Apex, Raleigh, Garner and Clayton.

Pictures: John Dee Holeman at Sertoma

john-dee-holeman-8Cary, NC – It was another evening of iffy weather, but that didn’t keep an enthusiastic crowd from enjoying the music of roots bluesman John Dee Holeman. We sent photographer Brian Speice to cover the performance on Saturday night at Sertoma Amphitheatre in Cary.

John Dee Holeman

From Wikipedia:

John Dee Holeman (born April 4, 1929) is an American Piedmont blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His music includes elements of Texas blues, R&B and jazz.

Holeman was born in Hillsborough, North Carolina, United States, but since 1954 he has been based in Durham, North Carolina. Inspired by Blind Boy Fuller, Holeman was both singing and playing his guitar at local parties and other events by his mid-teens. By his mid-twenties Holeman had bought his first electric guitar and relocated to Durham, where he played with the pianist, Fris Holloway.

During his working lifetime, Holeman had full-time employment was a construction worker, and music was a part-time pursuit. In 1994, Holeman was presented with the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award. A song he co-wrote with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, “Chapel Hill Boogie”, was featured on the 2007 Grammy Award nominated album, 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads.

Restaurants: PDQ Opens in Cary

pdq cary ncCary, NC —  PDQ, A new fast-casual restaurant, has opened in Cary. They serve tenders, salads and sandwiches with an interesting claim to fame: no freezers or microwaves.

PDQ Opens in Cary

The new PDQ in Cary is a very attractive and unique building, both inside and out, with bold colors and architecture. It’s located in the rapidly rising SearStone development at the corner of Davis and High House.

This is the third PDQ in the Triangle and the fourth in North Carolina. The restaurant chain started in Florida in 2011.

PDQ Menu

PDQ stands for “People Dedicated to Quality.” Nothing is frozen or microwaved. The tenders are hand-breaded, the salads hand-tossed. They serve chicken and turkey, no beef.

There’s also hand-turned milkshakes and fresh squeezed lemonade.

Report from the Field

PDQ was rocking at lunchtime today. Big crowds swarmed in after Green Hope’s freshman orientation, but the large staff kept it moving with wait times for food virtually non-existent.

The fries were crisp, and salads, sandwiches and chicken tenders all received enthusiastic endorsement from my party of six (three kids, three adults).

Chicken Corner

PDQ’s location at the corner of Davis and High House brings the number of fast-casual chicken joints in the neighborhood to three – Chick Fil A at Stonecreek, and Bojangles and PDQ in Searstone.

And, if I am not mistaken, Rudino’s serves chicken, as does Doherty’s and Cafe Caturra.

That’s six places to get chicken on one corner.

From now on, we’ll have to call the intersection of Davis and High House “Chicken Corner.”
